Following the recent election results in Pakistan, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his congratulations to Shehbaz Sharif on his re-election this Tuesday. Sharif, who is the brother of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, secured his position as Pakistan’s leader once again, after overcoming a heavily contested election process marked by accusations of voting irregularities. His inauguration occurred a day subsequent to his parliamentary election, amidst opposition from supporters of the detained ex-Prime Minister Imran Khan, with President Arif Alvi administering the oath of office in Islamabad.
Despite Imran Khan’s party achieving a leading number of seats in the National Assembly with 93 of the 266 seats filled earlier in the month, a coalition government was formed between the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz), which holds 75 seats, and the Pakistan Peoples Party, with 54 seats. Khan has voiced his opinion that Sharif’s newly established cabinet lacks the backing of the electorate.
Shehbaz Sharif, aged 72, had previously served as the Prime Minister of Pakistan from April 2022 until August 2023, before the dissolution of the Pakistani parliament in anticipation of the elections set for February 8.
