Oil tanker boarded by masked men
In the Gulf of Oman, an oil tanker entangled in a dispute between the United States and Iran was reportedly intercepted by masked individuals wearing army uniforms. The UK Maritime Trade Operations reported a loss of contact with the vessel, named St Nikolas, citing “unknown voices.” Tensions escalated as Houthi rebel attacks in the nearby Red Sea disrupted shipping.

Ambrey identified the individuals as “six military men” who boarded the tanker. The incident occurred in the waters between Oman and Iran, a crucial passage for global oil trade, with the Strait of Hormuz being a key route that has witnessed previous ship seizures by Iran.

There has been no immediate acknowledgment from Iran and Oman regarding the boarding. St Nikolas, formerly known as Suez Rajan, is associated with the Greek shipping company Empire Navigation.

United Against Nuclear Iran suspects that the tanker may have carried oil from Iran’s Khargh Island. The vessel had previously discharged cargo in Texas under a Justice Department order. In September, Empire Navigation pleaded guilty to smuggling sanctioned Iranian crude oil, agreeing to pay a $2.4 million fine over the case involving the tanker.
