The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary, Jay Shah, announced at a media event in Rajkot that Rohit Sharma will lead the Indian cricket team in the upcoming Men’s T20 World Cup in 2024. Shah also confirmed that Rahul Dravid will continue to be at the helm until the global tournament takes place.
This marks Rohit Sharma’s second stint as the captain in the T20 World Cup, the first being in 2022. In the previous edition, India faced a defeat at the hands of eventual champions England in the semi-finals, leading to Rohit’s absence from Twenty20 Internationals. However, he made a comeback to captain the team against Afghanistan in January 2024, a move that strongly hinted at his leadership role in the forthcoming World Cup scheduled in the USA and the West Indies in June.

In contrast, after the ODI World Cup final in 2017, Rahul Dravid’s contract had expired. Despite the expiration, he was requested to stay on as part of the support staff for the December–January tour to South Africa without a finalized contract.
Shah clarified that discussions about Dravid’s role had taken place preliminarily, but further rounds of talks are expected before any formal decision is made. Shah explained, “I will speak with him whenever there is time; there are back-to-back series happening right now. They were in South Africa, followed by a [T20I] series against Afghanistan, and they are currently in England. We had absolutely no opportunity to talk in between.” He indicated that additional discussions would occur before making any decisions regarding Dravid’s future with the team.
