The 30-year-old champ became the fourth player from India to reach the top spot, following spinners Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, and Bishan Singh Bedi, thanks to his nine-wicket match total. He has since above Pat Cummins, Kagiso Rabada, and Ravichandran Ashwin.

Bumrah has taken five wickets in two different Test matches in 2024. In Cape Town, the Indian pacer started the year with stats of 6/61 against South Africa, and in his most recent match, he was even more impressive with 6/45 against England.
Bumrah broke Ashwin’s 11-month stint as Player of the Match after helping India win by 106 runs in Visakhapatnam to tie the five-match series. For the first time, Bumrah has reached the top spot. Despite having taken 10 five-wicket scores for the nation in his 34 Test match outings, he has never finished better than third in any ranking.

With 881 rating points to his name, Bumrah is now the only bowler from India to have amassed more than Ashwin (904) and Jadeja (899). In March 2017, Ashwin and Jadeja both hold the remarkable distinction of being jointly rated first. South Africa’s Kagiso Rabada, who heads the speed department, is still ranked second among Test bowlers even though he missed the Proteas’ Test series in New Zealand. In that same encounter, Ashwin, who has been ranked top since March of last year, only claimed three wickets for India, dropping him to third place.
