The series of student suicides in Kota, a hub for competitive exam preparation, has tragically continued with the discovery of a deceased IIT aspirant in his hostel room today.
Despite concerted efforts to prevent such incidents in this city, which attracts students nationwide for exam coaching, this marks the fourth suicide this year, occurring shortly after the JEE Mains results were announced. Shubh Choudhary, a student from Jharkhand, had dedicated two years to preparing for the JEE-Mains, essential for admission into top engineering colleges, including the IITs.
Disappointed by his lower-than-expected score, Choudhary’s decision led to his untimely death, with his body found hanging this morning. Authorities are currently investigating his room for clues or a suicide note, and his family has been informed, awaiting an autopsy upon their arrival. In a separate case, a student has been missing in Kota since Sunday, prompting a search operation that includes the state emergency response force and motorboat patrols on the Chambal River.
The intense pressure to excel in competitive exams like the IIT-JEE is a significant challenge in preventing student suicides in Kota. Despite coaching centers implementing stress management guidelines, the city recorded 26 suicides last year, indicating the persistent issue.
